Moni Vronda

We first visited the oldest monastery on Samos during our first stay on the island in 1992. We walked from Kokkari to the monastery through lush pine forest. Back then the monastery was used by the greek military, so we didn’t take any photos.

We returned in 2006 and it was a pretty sad experience to learn how bad the area was damaged by the forrest fires in 2000. The pine forest was almost gone and the monastery severely damaged by the fire. Almost by divine intervention the church was spared.
